Taking Inventory

In preparation for my “spend less” challenge, I will be taking inventory in a sense of the items I already own, with a focus on clothing.
Ideally what I’d like to do is, have a “no buy” 6 months of clothes.

While I take inventory, I’m giving myself permission to purge clothes and items that no longer serve me. I will create a list of items to purchase in preparation for the challenge, keeping in mind practicality and need. I believe it is beneficial to be honest with yourself about what you enjoy, wear, and use in terms of clothing and items.
If you’re anything like me, you might struggle with wastefulness or the money spent when trying to let go of things.
Yet, I have found the following helpful when trying to part with physical objects:
  • The $ I’ve spent on this is already gone and is a sunken cost
  • How much are things costing you in terms of space, both mental and physical?
  • Being grateful that the item once served a purpose for you, yet you no longer need it and perhaps a family, friend, or someone in the community could benefit from it
  • Posting items to your local “Buy Nothing Good”
  • Practice the 1 in, 1 out method (parting with a similar object when you buy something new)
  • Having a threshold dollar amount that you’re willing to post something to sell
  • Finding an organization that has a mission you support, to make donating easier (I found that the last time I cleaned house, it was so much easier for me to make donations knowing they were going to the local Humane Society Resale Store)

What tips or reminders do you find useful when trying to declutter / purchase intentionally?
